If you follow our little blog then you may know that I have four daughters. The youngest daughter is nine years old and recently came to me asking if she could update her bedroom. Honestly, we have not done a remodel for her since she moved from a crib to a big girl bed when she was about two-years-old so an update was way past due. She is obsessed with unicorns and in that in-between stage not really a little kid anymore but not a teenager yet either. I guess you would say pre-teen. So we set out to update her bedroom a couple of weekends ago and wanted to share some of her new room with anyone out there who might be doing the same process with your kiddos. We included a few of our favorite items out of the room as well to help with some ideas for decorating.
We started out by choosing a few colors, she knew she wanted a lot of pinks. Our first purchase for the room were these beautiful curtains from Lush Decor. These are like the ultimate princess curtains that really pull the room together. They have a pink heavy curtain material but covered by a light organza that you can pull to the side. It reminds me of something you would see in a castle so we thought they would be perfect for a room full of unicorns.
My daughter loves art, she is always drawing and creating art so we spent a lot of time discussing the wall decor. We wanted to use a bunch of her own artwork pieces but also mix in some fun wall decor. We found a bunch of fun stuff at Hobby Lobby and other various chain stores. A couple of our favorites purchases though were from Digibuddha and Just So Posh.
Digibuddha is one of my favorite places to shop for unique gifts and the last time I was on the site I noticed they had some really cute foil prints. They come in two different sizes, 5X7 or 8X11, but for this room, we went with the 8X11. You can also choose the color of the paper and color of the words/image. They have tons to choose from with all different kinds of themes. We picked out a bunch of inspirational sayings and of course, a unicorn. We kept it simple and when with a white background and the rose gold images. I felt like it was a great way to give her some positive messages every day. We scattered them throughout the room so everywhere she looks she sees positivity. We just used some old frames we had laying around that matched that I picked up on clearance.
Just So Posh:
Just So Posh is one of my favorite places to shop for personalized gifts and decor items. We actually got a couple of different things from them but one of my favorites is this super cute personalized frame. They have a bunch of frames to choose from. A huge variety of color and theme options. You can add a name and make it extra special. It’s a great way to display your favorite pictures. We put my daughter’s baby picture in her frame and put it on her desk. She loves that it has her name on it and works great in her decor.
One of our favorite wall decor pieces is from Pinhole Press. They have dry erase wall stickers that you can personalize with your name and photos across the top. They have several different sizes and options to choose from. You can get a blank one like this or a calendar. As I mentioned my daughter loves to draw so this is perfect for her room. She can create on it daily then wipe it clean for a new creation the next day. We have not completely attached it to the wall yet (so excuse our photo) we are still trying to decide the best placement. So right now we have it put up with tape and will affix it soon.
My kiddo is still young enough that she likes to play with some toys, mostly her dolls. So I needed some storage solutions to include in the room. I found this really nice rope basket from Irgonomico on Amazon. I love shopping on Amazon, they always have great items with free shipping. This rope basket is super stylish and a great way to store the toys that she likes to play with but in a neat and organized way. Plus it looks great in the room.
Finally, it was time to purchase some pillows for her new day bed. She wanted a variety of pillows and we got a bunch from some chain stores like Hobby Lobby & even Dollar General on sale and clearance. However a few of her favorites are from Sleep Zzz, SensaCalm, and Just So Posh.
Sleep Zzz pillows are our favorite. They didn’t have a unicorn pillow but we did find this adorable little birdies pillow that worked great with the colors she chooses for her room. The Sleep Zzz pillow is amazing for kids. They are the perfect size for kids so they fit inside the pillow perfect for a comfortable and cozy sleep. My daughter has trouble sleeping due to her ADHD but the Sleep Zzz pillow helps her sleep. She feels cozy and surrounded like it’s hugging her to sleep. So it’s a must-have for her new bed.
SensaCalm is one of our favorite pillows. Of course, mainly because it’s a unicorn my daughter had to have it. Super soft and so cute. As a mom, of a child with special needs, I love it because it’s weighted. So when she is having a hard time falling asleep or calming down she can use it by laying it on top of herself to feel hugged without having to need human contact. She has a really hard time sleeping so the SensaCalm pillow is perfect for her. She wraps up underneath it or cuddles with it and she says it feels like she is falling asleep with a parent hugging her giving her comfort throughout the night. This combined with the other pillow really helps her sleep.
Just So Posh:
Just So Posh, as I mentioned, has a bunch of different personalized decor items. I found this super cute family tree pillow. It included the pillowcase and the pillow. You can add a name, I put her first name but if you were using it in a living room you could do a family name as well. Super cute and perfect for the room.
I also wanted to quickly mention a great book I used as a resource for organizing my daughter’s closet. I didn’t include an image of her closet but she has a lot of storage space and it was a chaotic mess. The Real Simple Method to Organizing Every Room and How to Keep it that Way was super helpful. Full of awesome tips and tricks to help you organize every room in your home. I used these tips and we got her closet completely organized and it has stayed that way for several weeks now. It’s been a great resource.
