It’s almost Halloween and we are super excited, it is our favorite holiday and we love to celebrate all month long! This weekend we got into the spirit with a pumpkin decorating party. We have one every year. It’s so much fun to just enjoy some family time and have some Halloween fun. We have all different age levels in our home so we use a variety of pumpkin decorating techniques. We did some simple painting with some paint from Crayola, we used some fun foam kits from Oriental Trading Company, and a traditional carving kit from Vita.
We painted the entire pumpkin purple. He is supposed to be a vampire and for some reason, purple just seemed like the best color. Once we had it covered with some purple paint we used these awesome foam pumpkin decorating craft kits from Oriental Trading company to make the face. These kits are awesome if you have little kids. They may need some help with the paint but the foam kits are so easy they can do them all by themselves. The kits include everything you need to create the face. There are 6 different kits and you get 2 of each. The foam pieces are stickers. Just peel off and stick to your pumpkin.
We made these by drawing out with a pencil the image we wanted on the pumpkin and then using a variety of different paint brushes to fill in the image with black and white paints from Crayola. The acrylic paints work really well on the pumpkins and looked really bright and vibrant. If you are not so great at drawing you could use a stencil as well. There are tons online if you search google or Pinterest. This one was my favorite out of all that we did. So scary! If you have painters or this would be good for pre-teens and teens in the family.
Here is another one we did with paints. My 16-year-old did a variety of different patterns all the way around this pumpkin. Mixing different color palettes to give it a unique look from different angles.
We love to do some traditional carving. We simply cut off the top and cleaned out the inside of the pumpkin. We drew a design in marker on the side to follow along as we carved. Then used the Vita Pumpkin Carving kit tools to saw away at the design. If you have older kids or adults and want to do some traditional carving then the Vita Pumpkin Carving Kit is a must-have item. This kit includes a scoop, saw, and drill. They are really well made. If you have used those plastic ones you must try this set out. It won’t break, it’s really well made and durable. We had a really big pumpkin with thick walls and it cut through it easily. I loved this toolkit. The scoop made really easy work of the cleaning too which was nice.

No matter how you like to decorate pumpkins we hope you will have fun and spend some great quality time together with your loved ones. It’s a great way to spend some time together this fall. Let us know how you like to decorate pumpkins in the comments.
