We recently had to deal with a car accident, you may have heard me mention it in other posts here on the blog. Luckily in our accident, no one was seriously injured, we were very lucky but not everyone is as lucky as we are. I wanted to put together a quick article to share some of the things I have learned during our experience. It’s a lot of information and will cover everything you need to know about car accidents. Both what to do and what not to do. So if you ever find yourself in that situation you will have a little bit of knowledge in advance.
What to Do:
Try to Avoid Accidents:
There are a few simple things you can do to avoid an accident in the first place. These things will help you avoid the situation altogether and hopefully, you will never need this guide.
- Maintain your Vehicle
- Be aware of Cars in bad condition
- Stay to the right, in multi-lane roads
- Pay closer attention at night and on holidays
- Be aware of the weather
Visit a Medical Professional As Soon as Possible:
You may not feel that it is necessary to seek medical attention but it is always a good idea to see one. When you are in an accident you may have a lot of adrenaline which could mask an injury. It’s best to have a medical professional give you a full check up and make sure you have no hidden injuries.
This might also not be a top priority but it will save you a lot of stress later on in the process. Write everything down. Keep a copy of the police report, insurance information, and even a statement. Sometimes an accident may end up having to go to court and that process can take some time. You may not remember exactly what happened when you are finally in court to give a testimony. So write it down when it first happens and keep it on hand. Your memory is more accurate when it is fresh in your mind.
Contact a Lawyer:
It may not seem necessary at first. The other party involved might tell you not to worry about it, they will pay for it, or it was their fault. Sometimes those stories change once the bills from the accident roll in. So contact a lawyer. We called our lawyer the next day after our accident. They helped us through the entire process to make sure we had everything covered. A lawyer has way more experience in this situation and they can make sure you make it through the process without stress. One of our favorite Tampa personal injury attorney offices is KFB.
What Not to Do:
So there are a lot of things you should do after an accident but there are also a few things you shouldn’t do. These can be a lot more important than the things you should do. Sometimes making a mistake can cause you a lot more stress in the end.
Never Leave the Scene of an Accident:
Never ever leave the scene of an accident. This is illegal and you can get in a lot of trouble. Always stay put until you have made contact with the other party and traded insurance information.
Report It & Get a Police Report:
Having a police report can save you a lot of headaches with the insurance companies. So always have an officer come out and make a report even if there are no injuries. Keep it on file so you have it if needed.
Speak to an Insurance Company without a Lawyer:
Just like with the police you have the right to have a lawyer present when you speak to the insurance company. It’s best to speak to a lawyer before you speak to the insurance company. The last thing you want to do is assume the guilt of the accident and end up with no help for the costs of the accident.
Hopefully, these tips will help you out if you ever find yourself involved in an accident. I do hope you never need them though.
